Nobel Laureate and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has embarked on his first official visit to Chattogram since assuming his new role. The visit marks a significant step in his agenda to foster regional development and engage with key stakeholders in Bangladesh’s southeastern region.

Departing from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka, on Tuesday morning, Professor Yunus is accompanied by several top advisers, including those focused on Education, Health, Energy, Liberation War Affairs, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Upon arrival in Chattogram, Professor Yunus’s first stop is the Chattogram Port, where he will meet with port authorities and representatives from the shipping and trade sectors to discuss port efficiency and economic growth.

A major highlight of the visit is his role as the chief guest at the 5th convocation of Chittagong University, where he will deliver a speech and receive an honorary Doctor of Letters (D Litt) for his contributions to poverty alleviation and global peace. The convocation will award degrees to over 22,000 graduates, including 22 PhD holders, making it the largest in the university’s history.

Professor Yunus will also inaugurate the foundation stone of a new rail-and-road bridge over the Karnaphuli River at Kalurghat, aimed at improving connectivity and benefiting thousands in the southern areas like Boalkhali and Patiya.

In a personal touch, he will visit his ancestral home in Hathazari’s Bathua village, and formally hand over the land deed for the Chattogram Heart Foundation Hospital, signifying his ongoing commitment to public health initiatives.

This trip is viewed as a crucial demonstration of Professor Yunus’s focus on regional development, infrastructure, and education reform, while strengthening ties with local communities and institutions.
